Stay Alert, Stay Informed

All of us are exposed to fake news, racism and propaganda during our everyday lives. The overwhelming and exhausting amount of fake information we consume stems from news reports, social media, and by the leader of the Unites States, Donald Trump. WHO (World Health Organization) mentioned a rise, seen around the world of a “massive infodemic”, defined as an overabundance of information—some accurate and some not—that makes it hard for people to find trustworthy sources and reliable guidance when they needed it the most. The concept of spreading inaccurate information coined as “infodemic” was also supported by MIT Technology Review who stated, “social media has zipped information and misinformation around the world at unprecedented speeds, fueling panic, racism, and falsehoods. Limiting easy access to reliable information is socially, politically, and economically determent for many aspects of society. Several examples are, the way most media platforms operate, how the public perceives information, the shaping of campaigns and influence on votes. While all of us are spending more time on social platforms than usual, we are being exposed to more and more false media. It is important to keep in mind not all news reports or articles are fact checked. It is crucial to know what is and is not a reliable media source or platform, fake news can be harmful to yourself and others connected with you. Be mindful of the information you spread, consider how reliable the material is before sharing, stay home, stay safe, and stay informed!
